What to wear
This morning, I had a clothing crisis. The weather had changed and I couldn’t decide what to wear. By the end of it, it looked as if my bedroom had been ransacked with clothes strewn across the floor. I could take a lesson from David Beckham who puts out his clothes for the week.
Psalm 132 says that the Lord clothes his priests with salvation. I have been puzzling over that. What does that look like for you and for me? I believe that it is a promise for us because we are all made priests by Jesus (1 Peter 2.9).
It speaks to me of us carrying the presence of our loving Saviour with us, for our own lives and for those around us.
I am just back from a week of mission in Basel in Switzerland. We offered prayer for people on the streets and although I was way out of my comfort zone, it was enormously encouraging to see God touch many people deeply. On the first day, I was feeling especially nervous and God gave me a picture of a woman in a red scarf. The first woman we saw was wearing a red scarf and she was hugely thankful to be prayed for. God is so kind. I shouldn’t be surprised but it always amazes me when God meets people.
Over the week, we met people from Spain, Italy, Brazil, Hungary, Portugal, Ghana, Iran, Germany, France and even Switzerland! Cultural fences tumble down before the gospel. One sex-worker that the team met in the red light district could hardly believe that someone wanted to pray for her because she said that she knew she had sinned. She kept on repeating -” God loves me, God loves me, God loves me”.
Most days in our lives don’t involve a street mission, but every day, we are “on mission” in the sense that “mission” comes from the Latin “sent”. God sends us out to carry his saving presence and his promise of love and life and hope wherever we are.
The red light district is in the area known as Lower Basel but God kept reminding me that he is God of the heights and God of the depths (Psalm 95). Wherever you are, God loves you.
And as you decide what to wear each day this week, take a moment to remember that you are clothed with salvation.
With my love,
Kate
